  • Performance Comparison and Application Analysis of IOTA 9108 and IOTA 9120

Similarities Between IOTA 9108 and IOTA 9120

    Product Type and Applications:
Both are liquid precursor polymers that function as thermosetting resins and ceramic precursors. They can undergo pyrolysis under mild conditions to form high-temperature-resistant ceramics. They are widely used in ceramic- and metal-based composites, high-temperature adhesives, coatings, and thermosetting resins.

    Product Characteristics:
Low viscosity, fast curing, multiple curing methods (thermal curing, UV curing, etc.), high ceramic yield, excellent adhesion to metals, ceramics, and graphite, and easy processing for ceramic preparation.

    Solvent and Usage Precautions:
Sensitive to water and alcohol and prone to degradation when exposed to acids, bases, or protonic substances. They should be used in well-ventilated, dry areas with proper protective measures, away from heat sources, humid air, and water.

    Storage and Cleaning:
Unopened shelf life is six months. Once opened, it should be sealed and stored in a low-temperature, dry environment, with a usage period exceeding two months. After use, tools must be quickly cleaned with acetone or solvent oil, as cured material cannot be removed with solvents.

Differences Between IOTA 9108 and IOTA 9120

    Product Composition:
IOTA 9108 consists of repeating Si-N units, while IOTA 9120 contains repeating Si-N and Si-N-B units.

    Technical Parameters

    • Appearance: IOTA 9108 is colorless to light yellow, while IOTA 9120 is light yellow.
    • Solid Content and Molecular Weight: IOTA 9108 has a solid content of over 99% and a molecular weight of 700–900; IOTA 9120 has a solid content of 99.9% and a molecular weight of 700–900.
    • Viscosity: IOTA 9108 has a viscosity of 10–30 cP, whereas IOTA 9120 has a much higher viscosity of 10,000–20,000 cP.
    • Ceramic Yield and Density:
      • IOTA 9108 has a ceramic yield (at 800°C) of over 55%, a solidified content (at 800°C) of over 75%, and a ceramic density of 1.60–2.00 g/cm³.
      • IOTA 9120 has a ceramic yield (at 800°C) of over 50% and a ceramic density of 1.70–2.00 g/cm³.

    Pyrolysis Conditions

    • Crystallization Temperature:
      • IOTA 9108 remains amorphous below 1400°C and crystallizes above this temperature.
      • IOTA 9120 remains amorphous below 1600°C and crystallizes above this temperature.
    • Composition of Pyrolysis Products:
      • Under the same pyrolysis atmosphere, the resulting products differ.
      • In nitrogen or argon atmospheres, IOTA 9108 primarily forms SiC and Si₃N₄, while IOTA 9120 produces similar products but in different ratios.
      • In ammonia atmospheres, both primarily produce Si₃N₄.
      • In air, IOTA 9108 forms SiOCN, while IOTA 9120 forms SiBOCN.
      • The influence of fillers on pyrolysis products also differs between the two.

    Usage Methods

    Film Formation at Room Temperature:
IOTA 9108 forms a film when left at room temperature for three days, but it has poor hardness, adhesion, and transparency.

    Curing Methods

    • Thermal Curing:

      • IOTA 9108, without an initiator, cures at 200–280°C for 2–4 hours.
      • With thermal cross-linking agents such as DHBP, it cures at 120–180°C for 20–60 minutes.
      • With a platinum catalyst, it cures at 80–100°C for film thicknesses of 10–100 μm in 40–120 minutes.
      • IOTA 9120 cross-links and cures at 120–180°C in air or an inert atmosphere, or at 80–100°C using a platinum catalyst. The curing time depends on the temperature and catalyst amount, typically 2–5 hours.
    • UV Curing:

      • IOTA 9108, with photoinitiator 1173, cures under 365 nm, 100 W light in 20–60 minutes.
      • At temperatures above 300°C, the coating tends to yellow.

    Solvent Usage:

    • IOTA 9108 is solvent-free after synthesis and is generally not used with solvents. In special cases, 3M hydrofluoroether (product code 7100) can be used.
    • IOTA 9120 can be diluted with dry solvents, but no specific solvent is recommended.
