  • New Applications of Phenyl Silicone Oil

    Light-emitting diode (LED) is an electroluminescent solid device. With the continuous innovation of technology and the guidance of national policies, the entire LED product has developed rapidly, and the LED packaging industry has grown synchronously. Among the packaging materials, silicone packaging materials have been recognized by the industry due to their excellent performance and have become the fastest-growing and most valuable packaging materials, showing huge market value.

    LED silicone encapsulation glue is a new type of high-end liquid silicone, also known as optical encapsulation. It can maintain high transparency in the visible light region, has a high absorption rate for ultraviolet rays, and can improve the light output rate and service life of lighting devices.

    In recent years, due to the rapid development of the LED industry, the demand for LED packaging materials has increased. Among them, LED silicone encapsulation adhesive has become the leader among LED packaging materials due to its excellent physical and chemical properties. With the worsening of the energy crisis, the LED industry will maintain sustained growth, so the market potential of LED packaging materials is huge. High-power LED packaging materials require that their raw materials have high light transmittance and refractive index, and phenyl silicone oil has become an important component of LED encapsulation adhesive raw materials. With the increase of the phenyl molar fraction, the high temperature resistance, radiation resistance and refractive index of silicone materials are improved, and the importance of phenyl silicone oil for LED encapsulation adhesive is increasing.

    Phenyl silicone oil for LED packaging mainly includes vinyl-terminated methylphenyl silicone oil and phenyl hydrogen silicone oil. Phenyl silicone oil can be divided into low phenyl silicone oil (phenyl molar fraction 5% - 10%), medium phenyl silicone oil (phenyl molar fraction 25%) and high phenyl silicone oil (phenyl molar fraction 45%) according to the phenyl content. The requirements for phenyl content of LED packaging adhesives for different purposes are different. High-power LED packaging adhesives generally require a higher phenyl content in order to achieve a high refractive index, thereby reducing the loss of light source energy.

    Vinyl-terminated methylphenyl silicone oil refers to silicone oil with vinyl at the end and methyl and phenyl connected to silicon atoms on the main chain. According to the type of phenyl, it can be divided into methylphenyl chain type, diphenyl chain type and mixed type (containing both phenyl chain

    Section). Phenyl hydrogen silicone oil is divided into hydrogen-terminated phenyl silicone oil and side hydrogen-containing phenyl silicone oil, and the two have different uses. The former is added to the encapsulation glue mainly as a diluent or chain extender, and the latter is mainly used as a centralized cross-linking agent of the encapsulation glue, playing the role of a cross-linking center. The preparation method of phenyl hydrogen silicone oil adopts a cationic polymerization method, generally using sulfuric acid. In order to reduce the process flow, acidic resin can also be used for catalytic polymerization, eliminating the step of neutralizing the catalyst, directly filtering out the acidic resin, and the acidic resin can be reused many times.

    Vinyl-terminated methylphenyl silicone oil and phenyl hydrogen silicone oil are the basic raw materials for high-refractive index LED encapsulation adhesives. With the rapid development of the LED industry, the LED encapsulation industry has unlimited potential and huge demand for phenyl silicone oil. In recent years, with the further improvement of domestic phenyl monomer and intermediate production technology, research on this type of product has made certain progress, but there is still a certain gap compared with foreign products, which needs to be improved urgently. At present, the preparation technology and market of high-refractive index LED encapsulation adhesives are monopolized by foreign silicone companies. Phenyl materials are the key to development and are the focus of urgent research.
