  • Fumed Silica Supply Changes and Silicone Rubber Validation

When fumed silica prices rise or lead times grow, can silicone rubber producers switch to another fumed grade or precipitated silica?

A switch is possible to evaluate, but neither price nor a matching BET area justifies an immediate substitution, and precipitated silica should not be added at the same phr. First establish the affected grade, plant, packaging, delivery region and firm lead time. Compare surface treatment, moisture, aggregate structure, purity, dispersion and lot consistency. Then qualify the formula at laboratory scale, on production equipment and in the finished article. As of September 25, 2026, reliable public evidence does not establish a uniform price increase or general shortage across all fumed silica grades. Use formal supplier quotations, lead-time confirmations and actual orders.

What must purchasing verify about a supply change?

    1. Investigate silicon feedstocks, hydrogen, high-temperature reaction and off-gas units, surface-treatment capacity, maintenance and production scheduling.

    2. Distinguish hydrophilic and hydrophobic grades; examine packaging, storage, transport, imports, exchange rates and regional stock.

    3. Check demand from rubber, sealants, coatings, adhesives, batteries and composites, especially for a particular surface area, treatment or purity. One delayed grade does not indicate a market-wide shortage.

Purchasing should share findings with technical, quality and production teams and trigger change control rather than merely changing the material code.

Why is similar BET surface area insufficient?

    1. Hydrophilicity, treatment chemistry and extent, silanols, aggregate structure, bulk form and compacted density can differ.

    2. Moisture, pH, impurities, purity, dusting, incorporation rate, dispersion and demand for structure-control agents can differ.

    3. Cabot's fumed silica information identifies surface chemistry, aggregate structure, area and purity as performance variables; WACKER HDK information discusses rheology, processing and rubber performance. Evonik AEROSIL technical information for liquid silicone rubber describes effects on uncured rheology and cured mechanical and optical properties, including differences between treated grades. .

Can precipitated silica directly replace fumed silica?

Usually not on an equal-weight basis. Both can modify silicone rubber, but reinforcement, pores and adsorption, moisture, rheology, transparency and cost depend on the specific grades. IOTA's existing articles discuss the role of fumed silica in silicone rubber and reinforcement differences between fumed and precipitated silica.

    Calculate cost per accepted part

Test fumed, precipitated and blended gradients, adjusting loading, structure control, mixing and cure.

What is the actual cost and how should a supplier be audited?

    1. Calculate cost per accepted article: filler loading, mixing time and energy, dust loss and extraction, additives, filtering and rework, molding/cure cycle, scrap, mold cleaning, line changes, retesting, customer approval, segregated stock, downtime and expedited shipping.

    2. Audit the legal producer and plant, grade and treatment, current TDS/SDS, COA limits and methods, key raw material change control, capacity and maintenance, lot consistency, packaging and storage, deviations, continuity and application-specific compliance documents.

    3. Confirm that evaluation samples, trial orders and routine supply come from the same controlled plant and process. A lower price per tonne need not reduce cost per accepted part.

How should substitution and dual sourcing be validated?

    1. Retain the qualified baseline formula. Compare BET, moisture, pH and compacted density under the same methods and pretreatments; test equal loading plus rational dosage and blend gradients.

    2. Log addition order, incorporation time, torque, temperature, energy, rework and storage. Check uncured viscosity, plasticity, dispersion, filtration and storage, then scorch, cure rate, rheometry, molding and release.

    3. Measure hardness, tensile strength, elongation, tear, rebound and compression set. Add clarity, heat, electrical, volatiles and odor tests where the application requires.

    4. Scale up on actual mixing, extrusion or molding equipment; examine final color, size, surface, odor and use performance. Assess regulatory retesting for controlled products; observe multiple production lots.

    5. Use separate material codes and approval states for each source, keep TDS/SDS/COA and reference samples, define whether sources can be mixed in one batch, tighten initial inspection, require plant or treatment change notice, and maintain reasonable moisture-safe safety stock and contingency delivery.

When should a change be deferred?

    1. High-clarity products, demanding long-term seals or compression set, or narrow processing windows.

    2. Food-contact, medical or electrical applications whose records bind the original formula, or customer approvals specifying a brand or production site.

    3. Missing current TDS/SDS/COA, unproven mass-production consistency or too little time for scale-up and final-part testing; incomplete formulation records or a single short logistics delay.

Common mistakes and the purchasing sequence

    1. Equal BET, common fumed-silica category or cheaper precipitated silica do not establish equal performance. A laboratory tensile or hardness result alone is insufficient.

    2. A single supplier's shortage notice is not proof of a general shortage. A second source requires documentation, formulation testing, production validation and formal approval.

    3. Obtain written quotations, delivery dates and the affected grade, plant and pack; assess stock and orders, audit the alternative and obtain a production-representative sample; run laboratory gradients and full performance tests, scale up, verify the final article and any compliance implications, then approve separate codes and monitor several lots.

    FAQ

Is fumed silica generally in short supply now?

As of September 25, 2026, reliable public evidence does not establish a general shortage across all regions and grades. Confirm the specific supplier, plant and order.

Should a price rise trigger an immediate formula change?

No. Confirm the written quote, lead time and persistence of the change, stock position and qualification time first.

Are two grades around 200 m²/g interchangeable?

Not from BET alone. Compare surface treatment, moisture, structure, purity, density, dispersion and compound behavior.

Can a domestic grade replace an imported one?

It is a candidate, subject to current documents, representative samples, production equipment and finished-part tests.

Can fumed and precipitated silica be blended?

A controlled formulation trial is possible; recheck ratio, viscosity, structure, mechanics, transparency, cure and long-term use.

Are hardness and tensile strength enough?

No. Add dispersion, tear, elongation, compression set, volatiles, odor and finished-part tests as needed.

Why does a compound thicken after a silica change?

Silanols, moisture, area, aggregate structure, treatment and structure-control agents may contribute; compare mixing and storage conditions.

Does a cheaper silica lower cost?

Calculate loading, mixing energy, additive changes, scrap, tests and downtime per accepted finished article.
