  • What should be checked when selecting a platinum catalyst for addition-cure silicones?

Selecting platinum catalysts and troubleshooting addition cure

Platinum concentration alone is insufficient. First confirm an addition reaction between vinyl-functional and Si-H-functional siloxanes. Then establish the actual platinum dose in the complete formulation, working time, cure temperature, inhibition risks, colour and storage conditions. More catalyst does not solve every cure problem.

IOTA-8100 uses a platinum(0)–1,3-divinyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane complex. It is a candidate for liquid silicone rubber, addition-cure potting materials, moulded silicone and silicone resins. Reaction speed and working time must be validated in the complete formulation.

    Product data IOTA-8100 platinum catalyst

Compare platinum dose rather than catalyst weight

Calculate the platinum introduced into the complete formulation, not simply the parts of catalyst added. Equal weights of catalysts at different concentrations introduce different platinum amounts.

Suitable dosage also depends on vinyl content, crosslinker Si-H content, cure time, temperature, inhibitor, fillers, pigments and mixing. Published concentration grades are not a fixed recipe. Use laboratory trials to establish rate and working time.

    Six checks before addition

    1. Reaction system: confirm vinyl/Si-H addition. Condensation cure uses a different catalytic mechanism.

    2. Actual platinum dose: distinguish concentrate strength from platinum in the complete formulation.

    3. Working time: allow for coating, degassing, pouring or injection after mixing.

    4. Cure conditions: record ambient and heating temperatures, hold time, thickness and mould temperature.

    5. Inhibition: examine sulfur, phosphorus, amines, some tin compounds and other contaminants.

    6. Application requirements: assess clarity, yellowing, odour, electrical properties and food-contact requirements separately.

    First checks for abnormal cure

    Symptom

    Check first

    Control trial

    No cure throughout

Missing catalyst, actual Pt dose, vinyl/Si-H ratio, mixing

Make a small reference batch with fresh materials

    Tacky surface only

Contact materials, release agent, gloves, cleaners, environment

    Change contact materials

    Local uncured areas

Poor dispersion, contaminated vessel walls or tools

    Change mixing method and equipment

    Cure too fast

Pt dose, inhibitor, material temperature, mixing time

Vary dose and temperature; measure working time

    Slow despite heating

Inhibitors, crosslinker, dosing error, actual oven temperature

    Compare reference and production formulations

    Colour change

    Heating history, purity, additives, pigments

    Compare with an unpigmented reference

    When to suspect catalyst poisoning

If the same catalyst batch cures normally elsewhere but fails where it touches a pigment, rubber part, release agent, adhesive, glove, mould or cleaner, investigate poisoning or surface contamination. Before adding catalyst, test contact materials separately and see whether the fault follows the contact condition.

A supplier’s poisoning-resistance claim does not replace formulation validation. Check compatibility with the actual sulfur-, phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing compounds, metal compounds, pigments, fillers and processing aids.

    From laboratory trials to production

    1. Fix a reference formula and record resin, vinyl silicone fluid, hydrogen silicone fluid, catalyst and inhibitor batches.

    2. Test several catalyst doses for working time, gel time and complete cure.

    3. Beyond room-temperature tests, validate actual material, mould and oven temperatures.

    4. Examine films, thick parts, enclosed regions and metal contact areas across geometries.

    5. Measure application-relevant hardness, tensile strength, elongation, adhesion and electrical properties after cure.

    6. At scale-up, review mixing, degassing, residence time, pipework, containers and cleaning changes.

    7. After process confirmation, control platinum content, appearance, batches, storage, first-in-first-out use and formulation test results.

    Information for the supplier

Provide application and final product; vinyl- and hydrogen-functional siloxane types and ratios; desired catalyst Pt concentration or target Pt in the formulation; working time, cure temperature and time; fillers, pigments, inhibitors, adhesion promoters and flame retardants; clarity, yellowing, adhesion, electrical and regulatory/customer requirements; annual consumption, packaging, storage and transport conditions.

IOTA can help review IOTA-8100 concentration grades and addition-cure formulation conditions. Cure rate, working time, clarity and compliance suitability still require the relevant documents and actual testing.

    Common selection errors

Comparing catalyst parts without platinum content; increasing dose for slow cure without checking inhibition; overlooking production mixing and longer residence after a successful trial; using equipment setpoints instead of actual material, mould and part temperatures; treating generic product data as proof of food-contact, medical or optical suitability.

    FAQ

Q1 What reaction does IOTA-8100 mainly catalyse

Addition crosslinking between vinyl-functional and Si-H-functional siloxanes. Confirm the formulation and reacting groups before use.

Q2 Does more platinum always mean faster cure

No. Inhibitors, poisons, temperature, vinyl/Si-H ratio and mixing affect rate. Concentrated catalysts also require accurate small-dose metering.

Q3 Should catalyst be increased for a tacky surface

First check contact materials, release agents, gloves, cleaners and pigments. Local inhibition may be contamination rather than insufficient catalyst.

Q4 Can 500 ppm and 10000 ppm catalysts use the same dose

They cannot be replaced directly at equal weight. Calculate against target Pt, then validate in the actual formulation.

Q5 Can room-temperature and heated cure share a formulation

Validate it. Working time and rate change with temperature; assess material and mould temperatures and thickness.

    Q6 Is IOTA-8100 suitable for food-contact products

A generic product page cannot confirm this. Review current compliance documents for the delivered specification, complete formulation, processing and finished-product tests.

Q7 Can the original dose be used after storage

Check appearance, storage history, expiry and necessary incoming properties first. Follow the delivery label and current TDS/SDS.
