  • Switching a Diffusion Pump from DC 704 to IOTA 704: Can Residual Fluid Be Mixed, or Is Cleaning Required?

Evaluating DC 704 Replacement with IOTA 704: Fluid Mixing and Diffusion Pump Cleaning | IOTA

Do not assume that DC 704 and IOTA 704 can be mixed merely because both are 704-type silicone diffusion pump fluids. Compare composition, vapor pressure, viscosity, purity and target vacuum; inspect the used fluid for aging or process contamination; and follow the pump manufacturer’s fluid-change instructions. For high-cleanliness, high-stability or near-ultimate-vacuum operation, fully draining and cleaning generally gives better control of validation variables.

Why does the same 704 designation not prove mixability?

Supplier products with similar chemistry may still differ in purity, volatile fractions, impurity control and batch testing.

Residual DC 704 may have undergone prolonged heating, air exposure or abnormal shutdowns.

Used fluid may contain moisture, cleaning residues, process gases, particles or other volatile contaminants.

An unchanged appearance after mixing does not prove unchanged ultimate vacuum, backstreaming or long-term stability.

Pumps may differ in charge, heater power, cooling and fluid requirements.

IOTA identifies IOTA 704 as tetramethyltetraphenyltrisiloxane, CAS 3982-82-9, with published values including 38 ± 3 cSt at 25°C, saturated vapor pressure and ultimate vacuum. Use current TDS documents, batch COAs and actual-equipment validation.

    When is direct topping-up unsuitable?

    See Table 1.

    Actual condition

    Main risk

    Recommended direction

    Discolored fluid or deposits

    Aging or contamination

Drain, inspect and clean per manual

    Confirm records before filling

Overheating, cooling loss or air inrush

    Decide from manual and validation

    Which specifications should be compared?

See Table 2. The shared number 704 is not a reason to skip these checks.

Why is used-fluid condition more important than the brand?

Used fluid accumulates thermal history and may absorb process gases and volatiles.

Cooling, heating or shutdown abnormalities may accelerate change.

Deposits in the pump and jets do not disappear when new fluid is added.

Contaminated residue may quickly affect fresh fluid; similar chemistry alone is not sufficient.

Must the pump be completely cleaned?

There is no universal answer; consider the type of change, used-fluid condition, vacuum requirement and manual.

Edwards instructions require cleaning when changing fluid grades, along with shutdown, cooling and draining.

Agilent’s full procedure includes complete draining, removal of applicable components, cleaning of the pump and jet assembly, thorough drying and correct refilling.

Whether a change between two 704 brands constitutes a grade change should be confirmed with the equipment manufacturer.

Full cleaning is particularly appropriate when the old grade is unknown, the fluid is discolored/cloudy/deposited, another chemistry was used, overheating/water/air inrush/backstreaming occurred, the process is contamination-sensitive, or a formal substitution baseline is needed.

For solvent cleaning, follow the SDS and requirements for ventilation, fire prevention, PPE and waste disposal. Do not improvise outside the manual.

How should IOTA 704 be validated?

Record pump model, rated charge, heater power and cooling.

Confirm the complete current-fluid grade, service time and abnormal-operation history.

Inspect used fluid and test relevant properties when needed.

Compare current TDS documents and batch COAs.

Drain, clean, dry and fill the specified amount of IOTA 704 according to the manual.

Keep backing pump, valves, cooling, heater power, gauge and process load unchanged.

Record pump-down time, base and ultimate pressures, stabilization and backstreaming.

Inspect pump, jets, chamber and workpieces for oil film or deposits.

Run repeated startup, hold, shutdown and restart cycles.

Decide on production substitution from actual equipment and process results.

If residue must be assessed, compare a properly cleaned condition with a controlled known-residue condition; do not make an undocumented production mixture.

    Common misconceptions

Both are called 704, so they can be freely mixed: the name does not replace TDS, COA, used-fluid inspection or equipment validation.

A transparent mixture is fully compatible: appearance does not prove unchanged vapor pressure, vacuum background or thermal stability.

Low vapor pressure guarantees improved ultimate vacuum: leaks, backstreaming, backing pressure, heating, cooling, jets and gauges also matter.

Changing fluid only requires draining: deposits and internal contamination may continue to affect fresh fluid.

Stronger cleaner is always better: cleaning must match materials, seals, previous fluid and safety requirements, and residues must be removed.

    Recommended decision procedure

Confirm that the equipment is an oil diffusion pump.

Confirm that the current fluid is genuinely DC 704.

Compare current TDS documents and batch COAs.

Review service time, color, contamination and abnormal history.

Consult manufacturer change and cleaning instructions.

Set draining, cleaning and residue control from cleanliness and vacuum targets.

Validate IOTA 704 under consistent conditions.

Define formal changeover and future topping-up rules only after validation.

IOTA Silicone Oil (Anhui) Co., Ltd. supplies IOTA 704 and supporting documents and can assist with validation conditions based on pump model, target vacuum, current fluid, change method and process cleanliness. Whether old fluid may remain must be determined from the manual and actual results.

    FAQ

Can IOTA 704 be added directly to a pump previously using DC 704?

Not from the 704 designation alone. Compare TDS documents, used-fluid condition, equipment requirements and process cleanliness; drain and clean when controlled validation is required.

Will a small DC 704 residue necessarily reduce ultimate vacuum?

Not necessarily, but no effect can be guaranteed. It depends on quantity, aging, contamination, pump design and target vacuum.

Does similar chemistry permit long-term mixing?

No direct conclusion can be made. Similar chemistry does not mean identical impurities, volatile fractions, used-fluid condition or long-term results.

Must the pump be dismantled and cleaned every time?

Not always. Follow the manual and consider fluid condition, change type, contamination and cleanliness requirements.

What if ultimate vacuum does not improve after changing?

Check leaks, backing pressure, heater power, cooling, jets, charge, gauge and contamination.

Can fresh fluid be used to flush the pump?

Only if allowed by the manufacturer. Flushing cannot replace required inspection, cleaning and drying.

Can IOTA 704 and IOTA 705 be mixed?

Do not mix solely because both are silicone diffusion pump fluids. Their target vacuum ranges and specifications differ.
