  • Peroxide Cure vs. Platinum Cure Silicone Rubber: A Complete Comparison of Advantages and Limitations

When manufacturing silicone rubber, choosing the right curing system is one of the most important decisions because it directly affects product performance, safety, consistency, and production efficiency.

Today, the two most widely used curing technologies are peroxide curing and platinum-catalyzed addition curing. Based on the latest industry developments and real-world application experience, IOTA Silicone Oil provides an in-depth comparison of these two technologies to help manufacturers select the most suitable solution for their applications.

Peroxide-Cured Silicone Rubber: Proven Technology with Cost Advantages

Peroxide curing is a well-established and widely adopted curing method. During the curing process, organic peroxides decompose at high temperatures to generate free radicals, which initiate crosslinking by reacting with the silicone polymer chains.

Its biggest advantage is cost-effectiveness. The formulation is relatively simple, making it an economical choice for large-scale production. Since the cured network mainly consists of strong carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds, peroxide-cured silicone rubber offers excellent heat-aging resistance and low compression set, making it suitable for static sealing applications and high-temperature industrial environments.

However, peroxide curing also has several drawbacks.

During vulcanization, volatile by-products such as acetophenone are generated. These residues can cause unwanted odor and may reduce long-term stability and optical clarity. Acidic decomposition products may also affect heat resistance and, in some cases, contribute to equipment corrosion. In addition, peroxide-cured silicone generally provides lower tear strength and is more difficult to maintain with consistent quality from batch to batch.

Platinum-Cured Silicone Rubber: Superior Purity and Performance

Unlike peroxide curing, platinum curing relies on a platinum catalyst to promote an addition reaction between Si-H groups and vinyl groups.

The greatest advantage of this technology is its exceptional purity.

Because the addition-curing process produces virtually no volatile by-products, platinum-cured silicone rubber is naturally odorless and tasteless while delivering outstanding transparency, excellent yellowing resistance, and superior biocompatibility. These characteristics make it the preferred choice for demanding applications such as medical devices, baby care products, food-contact materials, and other high-end silicone products.

Another major benefit is process consistency. Platinum curing delivers highly repeatable performance from batch to batch and can achieve rapid curing at relatively low temperatures, significantly improving manufacturing efficiency.

Its primary disadvantage is the higher initial material cost. In addition, the curing process requires a clean production environment because certain contaminants—including sulfur compounds, amines, and organotin compounds—can poison the platinum catalyst and prevent proper curing.

    IOTA High-Purity Platinum Catalyst Solutions

To meet the demanding requirements of platinum-cured silicone systems, IOTA Silicone Oil has developed the IOTA 81 Series and IOTA 82 Series high-purity platinum catalysts.

These catalysts are based on highly purified platinum-divinyltetramethyldisiloxane complexes and are manufactured under strict quality control to minimize heavy metal impurities such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. The result is excellent catalytic activity, outstanding batch-to-batch consistency, and reliable processing performance.

IOTA platinum catalysts are widely used in medical-grade silicone rubber, premium personal care products, precision electronic encapsulation, and other high-performance silicone applications where purity and reliability are critical. They also help eliminate contamination issues commonly associated with conventional catalyst systems.
