  • Why Can Two Silicone Oils Both Rated at 1,000 cSt Perform Differently?


    The same nominal viscosity of 1,000 cSt only indicates that two silicone oils have similar kinematic viscosity under specified test conditions. It does not prove that their volatility, low-temperature fluidity, high-temperature stability, low-molecular-weight content or compatibility are identical.

    When changing batches or suppliers, acceptance criteria should be established according to the actual application. Comparing only one viscosity value on the Certificate of Analysis, or COA, is not sufficient.

    First Confirm How “1,000 cSt” Was Measured

    Kinematic viscosity must always be interpreted together with the test temperature and test method. The viscosity of the same sample changes with temperature.

    Purchasing specifications should clearly state:

    • Kinematic or dynamic viscosity

    • Test temperature

    • Test method

    • Acceptable viscosity range

    • Sampling and batch rules

    cSt and mm²/s are numerically equivalent:

    1 cSt = 1 mm²/s

    Determine whether the silicone oil provides lubrication, release, damping, insulation, heat transfer, surface modification or another function.
