  • Phenolic Foam-Specific Silicone Oil: The "Invisible Fire Guardian" Protecting Urban Skylines

    As urbanization accelerates, supertall buildings are springing up like mushrooms after rain, making their fire safety an issue of increasing societal concern. External wall insulation materials, as a crucial part of a building's envelope, can easily create a "chimney effect" if ignited, causing fires to spread rapidly and leading to irreparable tragedies. Phenolic foam (PF), as a third-generation emerging insulation material, is hailed as the "closest-to-ideal" Class A fire-resistant insulation material due to its inherent flame retardancy (Limiting Oxygen Index LOI > 50%), low smoke and low toxicity when exposed to fire (smoke generation is only 1/10th that of polystyrene), and excellent dimensional stability at high temperatures. However, its inherent brittleness, severe powdering tendency, and excessively high closed-cell content have historically limited its large-scale engineering application.
    Today, a phenolic foam-specific silicone oil independently developed by Yangzhou Chenhua New Materials Co., Ltd. has successfully solved this long-standing industry bottleneck, becoming the "invisible fire guardian" silently protecting urban skylines. This new silicone oil is a highly efficient and specialized surfactant whose molecular structure has been meticulously designed to precisely control the gas-liquid interfacial tension during the foaming process of phenolic resin prepolymers, optimizing the kinetics of bubble nucleation and growth. Phenolic foam boards modified with this agent exhibit revolutionary improvements in mechanical properties: compressive and flexural strengths are significantly enhanced, effectively suppressing cracking and powdering during transportation and construction. Simultaneously, the cell structure becomes more uniform and fine, and the closed-cell content is effectively controlled, thereby substantially lowering the thermal conductivity and making the insulation and energy-saving performance even better. Most critically, all these performance enhancements are built upon the complete retention of phenolic material's outstanding fire-resistant essence—it remains difficult to ignite and self-extinguishes when the flame source is removed. Currently, this product has successfully achieved import substitution and is widely applied in external wall insulation systems of supertall buildings over 300 meters, interior partitions for subways and high-speed rail vehicles, and fire compartmentation in large ships—fields with extremely stringent fire safety requirements. Its widespread adoption provides a solid and reliable material foundation for building a safer, more resilient, and greener urban living environment.
